I cross the street to the bus stop, and while waiting for the bus to come I play games on my iPod, every now and then an ad popping up. When the bus pulls up, I gaze in interest at the ads on the back of the bus while I wait in line.
At school I use advertised stationary from my advertised Smiggle pencil case, while learning about advertisement. I eat advertised products from my advertised lunchbox, then take the bus home - and yes, the windows are tinted. With gum, dead flies and ads. Seriously, what is up with that? How often do people CLEAN those things?
At home I eat more advertised snacks, watch ads, news and cartoons - :) - on TV and annotate ads for part of homework. I then eat my dinner and change into advertised pajamas. I take a shower, using advertised shampoo, soap and conditioner, brush my teeth with an advertised toothbrush and hop onto my advertised mattress.
And I would be a fool to think that I'm not influenced by advertisement in this world.
You see and hear ads every day - on the radio, on brochures, TV, pamphlets, posters, on billboards, buses, bus-stops, YouTube, online, anyplace popular is a target for advertisement.
The victim? You. People use ads to sell things, to advertise businesses, to make things popular, to make people aware of things. And anyone with the cash and a weak mind is a victim.
I have to say I am influenced by ads. I saw one on the bus today, for Wet and Wild Sydney. Can't wait to go there. I saw a paintball ad in a brochure. I saw an online ad for Furby boom, and even though I'm not into that stuff anymore I was intrigued by association, thinking that it would be perfect for a present for my sister's birthday. We have a notice board at home, where we write reminders and to dos and family meeting reminders, and sometimes even put a little ad in there, such as for a family dance class hosted by one of us, or singing lessons.
Everything you own has no doubt been advertised before. We are literally walking advertisements, and we all live an advertised life.
You've probably seen an ad before. Let's say definitely. You've also probably been influenced by them because the ad relates to you, appealing to you and making you think your want is a need, because of wordplay, color work and high persuasion, attracting you.
It would be unwise to think that you are not influenced by ads, because you are and always will be. It would be an untruth to say otherwise. Everyone has advertisement in their lives. You may be your own, strong person. But even you cannot never want anything, because everyone has wants and needs and with new products and more ads on the line, wants won't all be satisfied, but will only duplicate for more.
A recent trick was held to prove that advertising influences people. A reporter sends a supermarket designer an envelope, with strict directions not to open it for six days, in which time they had agreed to meet at the local supermarket. The envelope had a pattern on the front drawn in pen.
The supermarket designer put the envelope on his desk, facing him. He was in suspense for six days, every day coming to work and staring at the front of the envelope, wondering what was inside the forbidden envelope.
Simple. I'm sure you all know by now that it has something to do with the envelope. When asked this question, most people said that the pattern looked like a vinegar bottle. Nope, unfortunately not.
He was then asked to open the envelope. There was a blank paper inside. He was told that it wasn't so much the inside, but more the envelope.
If you looked closely at the pattern in the video, it looked exactly like the path he took around the isles to the vinegar. After 6 days of puzzling over the pattern on the envelope, he felt used to it, so he took the exact route around the isles to find a product because it was the same pattern on the envelope.
It was an interesting study and experiment, and I loved the result. It goes to show that everything that advertising companies do, they do for a reason. The little things make such a big difference, and you don't even realize how fast things get stuck in your head. This happened subconsciously for this guy but it got him to buy something, and marketing people are that clever.
Advertising is everywhere, and makes a BIG difference in everyday lives.
